ALANDIA Barrel Cut Absinthe combines the best of two worlds: Real premium Absinthe with the complex notes of a barrel-aged Whiskey. To accomplish this, we first distill an Absinthe from wormwood, green anise and fennel and then store it for several months in an American Bourbon cask. Through this process, the Absinthe develops flavor and color. The recipe of the Absinthe is intentionally simple. We focus on the three traditional herbs of real Absinthe, as more complex flavors are added by the cask.

How to drink Barrel Cut Absinthe

The taste of Absinthe Barrel Cut is smooth and balanced, no dominating licorice notes are present. Barrel Cut's color is of a beautiful gold-brown with yellow reflections. The color stays stable, even when ice cubes are added. This means Barrel Cut does not louche, as we have deliberately chosen a low anise content in order to preserve the subtle notes of the barrel. You can detect notes of oak, spice and vanilla.

The alcohol strength is at 42% (84 proof), because we recommend Barrel Cut Absinthe to be served neat or on ice. This means without water and without sugar, just like a Whiskey. Therefore, Barrel Cut is not a conventional Absinthe, it is a new category: A ready-to-drink, barrel-aged Absinthe to sip. Enjoy and relax with this fine spirit!

The Barrel Cut Absinthe Project

Absinthe Barrel Cut is made in cooperation with the German Absinthe and Whiskey connoisseurs SaarWhisky. The distillery is known for their innovative Absinthes and premium single cask Whiskeys. Their long experience with barrel aged spirits influenced the development and making of the product. More projects are planned for the future. The idea is to offer different Absinthes under the line "Barrel Cut". The basis of the Absinthe will always be the same. The different tastes will come from the different barrels.

Barrel Cut is a barrel-aged absinthe that, after distillation, is stored in a whisky cask for a specific period of time. This gives it additional depth and maturity without losing its absinthe character.

Barrel Cut whisky is aged in whisky casks (not wine casks like Shiraz). The wood and the whisky's previous use influence the structure and mouthfeel, giving Barrel Cut a slightly smoky, yet also vanilla-like note.

Barrel aging makes the absinthe rounder, smoother, and more structured. The herbs are less dominant and better integrated into the overall structure. Anise recedes into the background, and the alcohol is harmonious without any harshness.

The color develops naturally through barrel aging. No herbal coloring is used – the light golden hue is a result of the wood and maturation.

Barrel Cut is ideal if you want to enjoy absinthe neat, like a whisky. At 42% ABV, it has a reduced alcohol content, making it perfect for enjoying neat. It's especially suitable for connoisseurs who also enjoy barrel-aged spirits like whisky or rum.

Frequently Asked Questions General

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit whose characteristic taste is primarily derived from wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and became widely known in the 19th century.

Absinthe is traditionally diluted with ice-cold water, which is slowly dripped into the glass – often over a sugar cube. This preparation allows the aromas to unfold and creates the typical "louche" effect, where the spirit becomes milky and cloudy.

The high alcohol content serves as a carrier for the subtle herbal aromas and preserves them. Absinthe is therefore not intended for pure consumption, but is traditionally drunk diluted with water.

Absinthe is a traditional herbal spirit, whose characteristic taste is mainly due to wormwood, anise, and fennel. It originated in the border region between Switzerland and France and gained widespread recognition in the 19th century.

For the classic preparation, an Absinthe glass, an Absinthe spoon for the sugar cube, and a carafe or fountain with ice-cold water are used. These tools allow for slow dilution and ensure a balanced taste experience.
