One thing is clear: if you want to drink Absinthe according to the traditional ritual, you also need the right Absinthe glass. But what exactly makes an absinthe glass? What are classic glass designs and which glasses are modern? The answer can be found in today's article on Absinthe Glasses.
Absinthe Glasses: From Pontarlier Glass to Skull Glass
If you want to prepare absinthe correctly, you should buy the right absinthe glass with your first bottle of absinthe. Traditional absinthe glasses have a reservoir in the base. It measures the correct amount of absinthe. The reservoir can also be replaced by a dosing mark. In the beginning, when absinthe was still a relatively new drink, normal bistro glasses were also used, i.e. glasses in which wine or other aperitifs were served. However, since absinthe is classically mixed with water and a drinking ritual for enjoying a glass developed even in historical times, special absinthe glasses soon emerged. A typical absinthe glass usually has a small neck with a subsequent round reservoir. This reservoir helps to measure the right amount of absinthe for a glass of the Green Fairy.
Pontarlier Glass
A typical reservoir glass is the Pontarlier Glass. It was the most popular absinthe glass during the Belle Epoque. The Pontarlier Absinthe glass has another feature, a cut facet, as an aid to add the exact amount of water. In the following picture, you can clearly see the features mentioned.

Modern design for Absinthe glasses
Of course, there are also other types of glasses used for drinking absinthe. Some of them stand for exclusivity and, with their designs, represent French history, such as the Absinthe Glass Versailles. Others, like the Absinthe Glass Torsade, belong to a different category of absinthe glasses: they are called "Swirl Glasses." These glasses create a wonderful effect when serving the Green Fairy: the glasses have a swirl design in the lower part. The design causes the light to refract and makes the louche look particularly spectacular. This is the cloudiness that occurs when the green absinthe is mixed with water.
Skull Glass
Other glasses, such as the Skull Glass, emphasize the forbidden reputation of the drink with their design. The Skull Glass has an integrated skull into which the absinthe is poured. The glass is smaller than conventional absinthe glasses. When filled with the colored wormwood spirit, the skull glass looks particularly spectacular! It perfectly matches the bottles of the Hamlet Absinthe collection. In the following photo, you can see a filled skull glass with Hamlet Absinthe.
