Absinthe Strong68 Review: Old and new recipe
Strong68 is our most popular absinthe. We launched it in 2002. From the very beginning, it was an absolute bestseller in our shop. Despite its popularity, we have revised the recipe for this strong absinthe over the years. We would like to inform you about the innovations in our Strong68 absinthe review.

Strong68 is a strong absinthe with an increased wormwood content. This means that whoever buys this absinthe is looking for a particularly strong version of the Green Fairy. In the original recipe, which we used until 2012, the taste was primarily characterized by the bitter note of wormwood. This bitter note was particularly prominent because the absinthe in its original version was a macerate. That is, the herbs were steeped in neutral alcohol (macerated) and the macerate was then filtered. This "cold" distillation retains a relatively large number of bitter substances. This method explains the initially bitter taste of the absinthe. Our drinking recommendation was to prepare the green wormwood spirit with at least 2 sugar cubes.
Strong68: Award-winning Absinthe from France
However, in 2012, we changed the production process. From that point on, Strong68 Absinthe became a high-quality distillate. The distillation process removes the bitter substances. However, to give the absinthe its natural green color, the clear distillate is steeped with coloring herbs before being bottled. This means that a short maceration also takes place here to color the absinthe green. This maceration primarily serves for coloring. However, a few bitter substances also enter the spirit. This process is quite desirable, as the aromas of the coloring herbs give Strong68 its characteristic taste.
However, the bitter notes are much more subtle compared to the original version. Furthermore, we moved the production of our Strong68 from Germany to France. Since 2012, the strong Green Fairy has been distilled in a family-run traditional distillery whose founding date goes back to 1859. The wormwood for the absinthe is grown on the distillery's fields as in former times, harvested by hand, and traditionally dried. This guarantees a particularly high quality and authenticity of the absinthe. This high quality was also confirmed by the silver medal award at the International Spirits Award ISW 2025 (and gold at the Craft Spirits Awards Berlin 2026 and Concours International de Lyon 2026).

Strong Absinthe with a pleasant effect
One can therefore say that the "new" Strong68 from 2012 is an entirely different product from the previous one. The slightly bitter character of Strong68, however, remains in a weakened form. Strong68 is a very strong absinthe with a perfect balance, as the recipe is based on a high wormwood content. Despite the high thujone content, you can enjoy one or two glasses of absinthe without worrying about hallucinations. Absinthe does not cause hallucinations (read more about absinthe & thujone in our blog post). However, you will experience a pleasant mental and physical activation.

In addition to its strength, Strong68 has another advantage: it is 100% natural. This means that its green color is based exclusively on the use of coloring herbs. It also contains no sugar. The taste is fresh and herbal, with a pleasant note of bitterness. When water is added, Strong68 turns a beautiful milky white. This louche effect is particularly beautiful to behold, as the absinthe contains many essential oils, which emerge when cold water is added, as they are no longer dissolved in the alcohol. The alcohol content of Strong68 is 68%. This is the classic alcohol content of it. At this high percentage, the absinthe retains its natural green color.
